FAQs

What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a medical system that has been used for thousands of years to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works by stimulating your bodies own healing process!

Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body that have high concentrations of nerve endings, triggering biochemical and physiological changes in the body. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, there are meridians that run along the body, and inside them energy (Qi) flows. This energy can become blocked or stagnant, causing an imbalance of Yin + Yang, and this is when illnesses and disharmonies can arise. Acupuncture works by reestablishing the flow of Qi along these meridians, harmonizing the body and restoring the delicate balance of Yin + Yang.

What can Acupuncture & TCM treat?

Everything! Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat all kinds of illnesses and ailments of the body + mind. These include: Digestion issues, insomnia, constipation/diarrhea, headaches, stress/anxiety, pain (think frozen shoulder, tennis/golf elbow, aches, sprains, tendonitis, arthritis etc) and women's health issues such as... PMS, infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, menopause, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea and so much more!

How many treatments will I need?

That depends on the individual and how long the health issues have been happening for. For short-term issues, a handful of acupuncture treatments could do the job. For chronic or longstanding issues, a “maintenance schedule” would be set up in order to ensure that your body’s systems are running smoothly and steadily after the initial period of relief and change.

Acupuncture is also a great preventative health measure. Remember, increased blood flow means your body is better able to heal itself, and will increase your immune system response, helping you better fight off and prevent disease.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

There are many different styles of acupuncture, some more “stimulating” than others. However, with traditional Acupuncture, people often report an occasional pinch when the needle enters and/or a “dull ache” around the needle site. After the needles are placed, it’s typical to not feel the needles at all and patients often report feeling extremely relaxed and some even have a nap.

Keep in mind, no sensation should keep you from resting very comfortably through your treatment. Don’t ever sit in pain while being treated. If something is keeping you from closing your eyes and relaxing for a while, let us know.

Do you direct bill? Will I be covered?

Yes, both locations offer direct billing. If you have a health care plan, a certain amount of treatments can be claimed. Check with your insurance provider to see if you qualify.

What should I expect at my first treatment?

For your first treatment, we will do an extensive intake of your health history and I will ask you questions that may not seem related. Be ready to talk about everything from current medications, current therapies, digestive health to sleeping habits and bowel movements. I will then check your pulse and look at your tongue. We will review your health goals and findings from your intake form. I will then get you settled comfortably on the treatment table with a warming heat lamp, and relaxing music - you may be asked to take off articles of clothing like you would in a massage. After I place the needles you will relax with them in for anywhere between 15 and 40 minutes, depending on the condition being treated. You will be left on your own to relax while the needles do their work. Many patients fall asleep during this time. Once time is up, needles are removed, and we go over what your treatment plan might look like.  Afterwards I suggest staying hydrated following your session. I also always recommend having a small meal about 30mins -1 hour before any acupuncture treatments and to wear loose fitting clothes to the appointment.
